Community Service

Lower School Community Service

During the holidays, each student from lower school purchases school supplies and other assorted items for needy children in our area. The students put the gifts in shoeboxes that they wrap and decorate. Representatives from Lower School Student Council help deliver the boxes to a local school. They also conduct bake sales donating funds to local charities. Lower school students make gifts and special foods for children at the Children's Inn at NIH and the Greentree Shelter throughout the year.

Middle School Community Service

Middle school students collect toys for needy children in our area, make "Happy Hats" and fill holiday bags for other children., They hold snack sales to benefit the Children's Inn at NIH. They collect funds for various charities including the Red Cross and food for local organizations including the Manna Food Bank. The middle school walked for the homeless this year raising more than $8000.

Upper School Community Service

Ninth grade students perform community service at the St. Martin's Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Each student spends approximately ten hours at the soup kitchen of the church, working with six or seven adult volunteers. The adults prepare the food, and the McLean students serve the meals and clean up. An upper school social studies teacher sponsors and supervises this program.
